The Tie That Binds (originally known as Badger) formed in Houston in late 1993. After releasing a series of singles and compilation tracks on Abridged Records and Justice Records, the band signed with Onefoot Records and released their full-length debut, Slowly Sinking Under, in 1997. Known for their energetic live shows, they toured extensively throughout the U.S., sharing stages with acts like Jimmy Eat World, Converge, and Boy Sets Fire. The band maintained close ties to Houston's underground scene, with a longstanding partnership with fellow local act Blueprint.
