Screambag
1990–1991
Screambag was composed of transplants from New York and Virginia. Geoff Jugel and Steve Elliott had been living on the Lower East Side of NYC, where Elliott played in Earth Pig (whose shows drew Thurston Moore and J Mascis). When Jugel followed a girl named Wendy back to Houston, Elliott followed six months later to start a band. They reconnected with Ben Willingham, a skate punk Jugel had attended a Virginia music conservatory with, whom he ran into in a Houston grocery store checkout line. Christopher Matranga rounded out the group on drums. According to Elliott, Houston at the time had a thriving underground scene, "much more tight knit and much more vibrant and exciting than what was happening in N.Y." The band's only other release besides the Infected compilation was a four-song demo tape featuring "Wreck It," "I've Tried," "Silver Toy," and "Silent Drive." The group disbanded after existing about a year. Matranga and Jugel briefly played together in Swampfinger.
