Planet Shock! formed in Houston in 1992 under the original name Maggot Flesh, teaming rap and samples with live metal instrumentation. The band's political content drew comparisons to Public Enemy. They traveled to Los Angeles where nine record companies offered deals, but the band split in May 1995 when half the members refused to sign, feeling it was selling out. Ironically, Planet Shock! won Best Rap Act at the Houston Press Music Awards shortly after dissolving. Some members joined the Hari Krishnas, others formed the Rebel Crew, and guitarist Bone Herrera, bassist Lee Leal, and DJ Audio III reformed as Aftershock. See also: Aftershock.
