MiddleFinger
late 1990s–2000s
Once one of the most popular bands in Houston, MiddleFinger blended ska, metal, noise, and pop around a sturdy punk nucleus. Fronted by singer Matt Kelly, whose lyrics were simultaneously absurd and meaningful, with Jay Brooks on bass, David Cummings and Jason Davis on guitars, and Brian Davis (also of 30 Foot Fall) on drums.
The band recorded their album Digitus Impudicus at Texas Music Studios between May and December 1999, releasing it in September 2000. The album's 14 tracks showcased the group's genre-bending approach, shifting from bouncy ska to staccato punk to near-death metal speed.
MiddleFinger never officially broke up but became largely inactive after Kelly relocated to Austin, where he played in Lick Lick and Baby Got Bacteria while working as a schoolteacher. The band reunited periodically for shows, including a 2011 performance at Fitzgerald's, practicing in Conroe and even writing new material for the occasion.
