Manhole

1991–present

punk

Manhole was an all-female punk rock band formed in Houston in the summer of 1991 after bassist Eev Rodriguez met drummer Joanne at a venue called Pik n Pak. They recruited guitarist Leah and later vocalist Allison Gibson. After Leah and Joanne departed due to creative differences, Rodriguez switched to guitar, bassist Chris Nine joined in 1992, and the band went through several drummers before settling on Beth Shaffer. They released a three-song EP in late 1992, followed by their self-titled debut album on November 25, 1994, celebrated with a release party at Fitzgerald's. The Houston Press listed the album as one of the best local CDs of 1994. In 1997, the band won a copyright infringement lawsuit against an LA band of the same name, who subsequently renamed themselves Tura Satana. Manhole were featured in the 2011 documentary When We Ruled H-Town about the 1990s Houston music scene, and have reunited for shows in 2011, 2016, and 2023.
