El Flaco

1993–1998

blues rock funk

El Flaco was a power trio that spawned from the tentacles of funky freak show Bouffant Jellyfish in 1993, named in homage to the Mexican restaurant the band practiced behind. The trio fused Texas funk with ZZ Top-style boogie and sludge into potent live shows that were usually stark, brutal, and sweaty — updating bluesy Texas boogie with a stiff dose of metal, noise, and bottom. Their relentless touring made them popular in Houston for years. They released their debut album Thub on Sector 2 in 1994, but when drummer Brad Turner left for NYC in early 1995, gigs became infrequent. Three years later the trio released El Pee on Cold Spring Records before calling it a day.
