Atomic Opera
1991–1995, 1997–2000s
Founded in Houston in September 1991 by guitarist/vocalist/cellist Frank Hart after he moved from Missouri and joined forces with producer/manager Sam Taylor — the same mentor figure behind King's X and Galactic Cowboys. The initial lineup included Hart, drummer Jonathan Marshall, guitarist Mark Poindexter, and bassist Len Sonnier (brother of Galactic Cowboys guitarist Dane Sonnier), placing Atomic Opera squarely within the orbit of Houston's early-'90s progressive metal scene.
Their debut, For Madmen Only (1994), was released on Giant/Warner Bros. Records and showcased a style that blended progressive rock, heavy metal, medieval textures, and eastern influences into something distinctly ambitious. Despite strong reviews, commercial success eluded them, and the band broke up in 1995 after parting ways with Sam Taylor.
Hart revived the Atomic Opera name for Penguin Dust (1997), recruiting former drummer Poindexter and multi-instrumentalist Kemper Crabb. The album's strength earned a deal with Metal Blade Records, leading to Gospel Cola. The original For Madmen Only lineup reunited for a 20th-anniversary concert in late 2014.
