Aftershock

1995–1997

rap rock metal

Aftershock was a Houston band that created a seamless hybrid of sample-happy hip-hop, full-force rapping, and heavy-metal guitar. The group evolved from Planet Shock!, which had formed in 1992 under the original name Maggot Flesh. After Planet Shock! disbanded in May 1995 due to internal disagreements over a record deal — half the band didn't want to sign, while bassist Lee Leal, Bone Herrera, and DJ Audio III saw it as an honor — the remaining members reformed as Aftershock with new recruits from Wax Gruve. Retrograde Records co-founder Jay Lean caught the band in LA and signed them, leading to a self-titled debut CD in October 1996. See also: Planet Shock!
